Early morning, before the birds wake, before the insects start humming and the frost turns all the grasses pastel. The sun rises over Perisher and begins its arc to Charlotte Pass, warming the plain and encouraging the mist to rise from the river. In the shadows, where the sun never reaches, there may still be patches of snow, left from the blankets of winter.
